National Conference for Veterans' Entrepreneurship 2008

September 3 & 4, 2008
Veterans' War Memorial,
San Francisco, California

American Legion Post 236
Co-host is an "action" veteran service organization dedicated to the well being of its members and the good of the military veterans of the United States of America.

Enterprise Post 236 has developed several programs and services to assist and benefit its members and the veterans community of the nation.

Post 236 emphasizes two (2) programs in particular; self-employment entrepreneurship and managed employment by employers.

Both of these initiatives are featured in the yearly veteran employment and enterprise conference in San Francisco, California in the fall of each calendar year.

The Association for Service Disabled Veterans (ASDV) is the non-profit organization that pioneered the concept of "ENTREPRENEURSHIP" as a valid goal in the rehabilitation of disabled in service and prisoner of war military veterans (SDV). In 1989, ASDV sponsored "pioneering" legislation that requires that 3% of the total procurement of State of California Government Agencies, and their prime contractors, be directed to service disabled veteran enterprises (SDVE). That legislated policy was subsequently endorsed by a state constitutional referendum approved by the State of California Supreme Court.

ASDV sponsored Public Law 106-50 that legislated a federal goal of 3% of all federal agency procurement, and that of their prime contractors, be directed to SDVE. This legislation also established supporting authority and institutions to enable the implementation of the P.L. 106-50 legislation. ASDV and TFVE also co-sponsored P.L. 108-183 Section 3, unanimously passed by the U.S. Congress and enacted by the President of the United States, 20 December, 2003. P.L. 108-183 establishes SDVE "SOLE SOURCE" and "RESTRICTED COMPETITION" for federal procurements. ASDV and TFVE drafted the President's Executive Order 13360, that directed government action to assist SDVE.

Disaster Preparedness Training

Are you prepared for an emergency or disaster?

If an earthquake happens, do you have a plan to reunite your family?

Even before Hurricane Katrina, most local, state and federal agencies determined that after a significant disaster, most people will be without basic services for at least 72 hours

Post 236 encourages everyone, especially those in the San Francisco Bay Area, to take steps to prepare themselves and their families for an emergency or disaster. Toward that endeavor, Post 236 is working in with San Francisco Fire Department's NERT (Neighborhood Emergency Rescue Team & Training) Training program to hold free 18 hour training classes at the Veterans' Memorial Building in San Francisco, CA. To find out more about NERT and to let us know you are interested in this free training taught by firefighters from the San Francisco Fire Department, email us at: info@enterprisepost236.org, Subject: Disaster Preparedness Training.

NERT is a registered, DHS compliant Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program.

Economics and Veteran Entrepreneurship

The mission of the American Legion Economics Division is to take actions that affect the economic well-being of veterans, including issues relating to veteran's employment, home loans, vocational rehabilitation, homelessness, and Entrepreneurship.

Enterprise Post 236 has established an initiative consistent with the mission of the Economics Division of the American Legion to development opportunities for America's veterans, especially those with service connected disability.

The Small Business Reauthorization Act of 2006 requires the Small Business Administration to give special help to veterans. The veterans receive priority service on business loans. Veterans interested in starting a small business, or expanding an existing business, can obtain advice and guidance from the Small Business Administration's Office of Veterans' Affairs.

For more information, contact the Veterans' Affairs Officer at the nearest SBA Regional Office, or write to the Director of the Office of Veterans' Affairs, Small Business Administration, 409 3rd Street, SW, Washington, DC 20416.

The Veterans' Small Business Act P.L. 106.50, Section III, P.L. 108-183, P.L. 109-461, Section V and the President of the United States' Executive Order 13360 all require special assistance to veterans for the development of veterans' entrepreneurship. For more information, contact us at Enterprise Post 236 or the U.S. Department of Veterans' Affairs' "VetBiz" web site at http://www.vetbiz.gov or call (202) 254-0238.
